2007 EU-US Summit - TABD in Washington DC

On April 30th, the Executive Board of the TransAtlantic Business Dialogue convened to discuss the progress on its agenda to establish a Barrier-Free Transatlantic Market. The meeting was held to coincide with the annual U.S.-EU Summit.

The 2007 Executive Board meeting was chaired by EU Co-Chairman Martin Broughton, Chairman of British Airways and Michael Klein, Co- President of Markets and Banking and CEO of Global Banking at Citigroup, on behalf of Charles Prince, President and CEO of Citigroup, the US TABD Co-Chair. The TABD Executives discussed the recommendations they sent to the Summit Leaders in advance of the Summit (see the 2007 TABD Report to the Summit Leaders, “Establishing the Barrier-Free Transatlantic Market”.) A key topic of conversation was the scope of TABD work in the area of innovation in energy and energy efficiency.

Following the Executive Board meeting, the TABD CEOs were joined by other business leaders and European and American government officials for a luncheon. The keynote speech was given by Charlie Cook, publisher of The Cook Report and Political Analyst for the National Journal Group.

Following the luncheon, the TABD Executive Board met with the Summit Leaders, U.S. President George W. Bush, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and European Commission President Barroso. The TABD CEOs applauded the Leaders for reaching agreement on a Framework to Strengthen Economic Relations between the United States and the European Union. The Summit Declaration underscores the close collaboration between the governments and the transatlantic business community and the political commitment by the Leaders to make concrete progress towards the goal of a Barrier-Free Transatlantic Market. The TABD will continue to work closely with the U.S. and EU to implement the provisions of the agreed Framework.

The TABD is gratified that the 2007 TABD recommendations to the Summit leaders had a direct impact on the Summit Declaration. The Summit Declaration not only addresses each of the TABD's priorities but also calls for the TABD to continue playing its important advisory role in the new Transatlantic Economic Council. This Council is to be chaired by Allan Hubbard, Head of the Presidents Council of Economic Advisors and Gunter Verheugen, EU Vice President and Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry.
