June 10, 2008 TABD Executive Board Meeting

The chief executives of leading American and European companies participating in the TransAtlantic Business Dialogue (TABD) met today in Ljubljana, Slovenia at the time of the US-EU Summit meeting. The CEOs presented their 2008 recommendations to the Summit Leaders and highlighted four issues for action: fighting investment protectionism, fostering innovation with strong protection of intellectual property, facilitating freest possible movement of people and goods across our borders, and enhancing cooperation on energy supply and climate change.

They also underscored the importance of bringing the Doha Development Round to a successful conclusion. Mr. Martin Broughton, Chairman of British Airways and TABD Cochair who led the discussion, commented, “With the turmoil in financial markets and the slowdown in economic growth, it is all the more important for the Summit Leaders to take concrete action to fortify transatlantic cooperation and build the Barrier-Free Transatlantic Market. We believe action in these four areas will accelerate transatlantic economic integration.”

IP Protection and Enforcement in a Borderless World

There is increasing agreement that concerted cooperation between governments and the private sector is necessary to reduce the incidence of counterfeiting and piracy of intellectual property-protected goods.  Tackling IP theft is a significant public policy issue for business and is among many governments' international economic policy priorities. This initiative aims at supplementing existing joint public private partnerships and seeks to set in place new milestones and actions supporting a long-term, practical and integrated approach to the three pivotal areas of IP enforcement - judicial and legal best practice, investigation and forensics, and best practice on financial sanctions and remedies for the illegal proceeds from contraband and piracy - within a specific regional context. This is a private sector initiative designed to explore these three main pillars by stimulating creative discussions, identifying innovative application of legislation and identifying best practice The event is intended to be mutually beneficial, cooperative, action-oriented partnering and about securing long term commitments from all participants. Delegates will come together for a 2-day conference in Argentina to build more effective contact networks to combat criminality, corruption and IP rights violations in the Tri-Border region.

As part of the 2007 framework for Advancing Transatlantic Economic Integration between the European Union and the United States, the U.S.-EU Summit Leaders identified priority growth projects that will significantly enhance transatlantic economic integration, growth, and job creation. One of these “Lighthouse Projects” is Innovation and Technology, and cooperation on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies is singled out for specific joint action. This symposium is designed to facilitate a dialogue about the societal benefits of RFID technologies. Discussion will focus on three current RFID technology applications: environmental protection and sustainability, healthcare delivery, and supply chain security. In addition, the symposium will explore future applications to enhance consumer experiences as well as the benefits of RFID technology to society at large. The event will feature representatives from transatlantic businesses and U.S. and EU government agencies currently employing RFID technology, user groups, and other organizations involved in the development and application of RFID.
